What is Audioblogging?

Audioblogging is the use of sound or audio in a blog instead of, or as well as, text and/or images. Many people prefer to speak rather than type, or listen rather than read, so Audioblogging will suit them very well. Audio is not just for speech of course; you can upload music and other sounds as well. You could record the baby crying or gurgling and upload that to your blog for the grandparents in another town or country to hear. How good is that? There are many other uses, of course.

To have an audioblog, you need to have a normal blog first, then you record the sounds you want and embed them. To do this you will need a software program that converts the sound. A free one is handybits.com that allows you to send voicemail. This can be converted to MP3 with Audacity. There are paying programs to use and some are easier than others, so if there is a free trial offered, make use of it before you decide.

While an audioblog may have its good points and some people find it useful, there are limitations to its use without an accompanying text. People often can’t remember what was said, so confusion may result. Also, how can you put a hyperlink into the spoken word?

Will the audioblog ever take over from the written one? Perhaps not, as most people need to have a focus to look at when listening to the spoken word. With music it is different, you just sit back and relax and if you lose concentration it doesn’t matter. But with the spoken word it is very hard to concentrate on it unless you can also look at something e.g. the person who is talking.

Another problem is that if the ‘audio posts’ are very long; many people don’t have the skills to stick with the same subject and not waffle on about everything under the sun. So maybe audio is fine for very short posts, but for anything of length, the written text is the ultimate way to receive it. At least you can go back over the written text if there was a point you didn’t quite understand. If it is all audio, then by the time you get to the end, you’ve forgotten that point, or can’t be bothered trying to find it.

So while audioblogging does have its uses, it will probably never take over from text blogging.
